Born April 25, 1932 in Hiroshima Prefecture, Izuta Yūzan (Izuta Junji) studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Shirakami Kakuzan (a student of Nakao Tozan I). He received his instructors license in 1960. He belonged to the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Gaku-kai.
