Born May 15, 1902 in Osaka Prefecture, Ishida Genzan (Murai Hideo) studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Nakao Tozan I. He became an instructor in 1925. In a career spanning more than 50 years, he received the Fuse City Education Association Culture Award in 1962 and was a member of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Gaku-kan and Chikugen-kai.
